By age nine, he was studying classical music at Peabody Institute. In 1985, Chestnut earned a degree in jazz composition and arranging from Boston’s renowned Berklee College of Music. While at Berklee, Chestnut was awarded the Eubie Blake Fellowship (1982), the Quincy Jones Scholarship (1983), and the Oscar Peterson Scholarship (1984).
Chestnut toured as pianist for Jon Hendricks, 1986–88; Terrence Blanchard, 1988–90; Donald Harrison, 1988–90; Wynton Marsalis, 1991; and the Betty Carter Trio, 1991-93. His association with Carter, which began in ’91, significantly affected his outlook and approach to music, confirming his already iconoclastic instincts. Carter advised him to “take chances” and “play things I’ve never heard,” Chestnut says..Chestnut is simply one of the most swinging piano players to come out of the 1980s young lions movement. His strong roots in gospel music and the soul-jazz era of the 1960s are never too far from his fingertips. Toe-tapping and finger-snapping are part of the involuntary reactions from any audience where Chestnut is seated at a piano. That’s right boys and girls. The Museum of Modern Art will host a Kraftwerk retrospective featuring LIVE performances by the band. It’s the first event of it’s kind in the history of MOMA. The band will give a series of eight performances, each devoted to one of its albums. The performances during “Kraftwerk-Retrospective 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8,” on consecutive evenings starting April 10, will not only feature tracks from one of Kraftwerk’s albums, but also other original compositions intended to showcase the group’s influence on contemporary culture. Projected images, including 3-D ones, will accompany the music. The albums will be performed in chronological order, one each night, starting with “Autobahn” from 1974 and working up through “Tour de France” from 2003.
Kraftwerk was formed by two music students, Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider, in 1970, and its robotic, repetitive, all-electronic music influenced virtually every synthesizer band that followed. By the mid-1970s, the group had invented a new electronic music, integrating mechanized sounds from life. Its compositions weave beautiful melodies with multilingual vocals and robotic rhythms. The concerts will take place in the Donald B. and Catherine C. Marron Atrium; tickets are $25 and will go on sale at noon on Feb. 22. Of the band’s original lineup in the 1970s, only Mr. Hütter will perform at MoMA. You may purchase tickets here.

The bands he arranged for included those of Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Jimmie Lunceford, Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Eckstine, and Sarah Vaughan. He and lyricist Carl Sigman wrote “If You Could See Me Now” for Sarah Vaughan and it became one of her first signature songs. According to the composer, his greatest influences were George Gershwin and Duke Ellington.
In the late 1940s, Dameron wrote arrangements for the big band of Dizzy Gillespie, who gave the première of his large-scale orchestral piece Soulphony at Carnegie Hall in 1948. Also in 1948, Dameron led his own group in New York, which included Fats Navarro; the following year he was at the Paris Jazz Fair with Miles Davis. From 1961 he scored for recordings by Milt Jackson, Sonny Stitt, and Blue Mitchell.
He also arranged and played for rhythm and blues musician Bull Moose Jackson. Also playing for Jackson at the time was Benny Golson, who also was to become a jazz composer; Golson has said Dameron was the most important influence on his writing. Dameron composed several bop standards, including “Hot House”, “Our Delight”, “Good Bait” (composed for Count Basie), and “Lady Bird”. His bands featured leading players such as Fats Navarro, Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, and Wardell Gray.
Richard Wyands-piano, John Webber-bass, and friends will hold a swingin’ party for what would have been Tadd Dameron’s 95th at Smoke Jazz & Supper Club tonight. You won’t want to miss this!

Houston was the most awarded female act of all time, according to Guinness World Records. Her list of awards includes 2 Emmy Awards, 6 Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards as of 2010. Houston was also one of the world’s best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide.

Inspired by several prominent soul singers in her family, including mother Cissy Houston and cousins Dionne Warwick and the late Dee Dee Warwick, as well as her godmother, Aretha Franklin, Houston began singing with New Jersey church’s junior gospel choir at age 11. After she began performing alongside her mother in night clubs in the New York City area, she was discovered by Arista Records label head Clive Davis. Houston released seven studio albums and three movie soundtrack albums, all of which have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum, or gold certification.

The world will never forget you…rest in peace.

The Chicago-born artist attracted attention when he was named Down Beat magazine’s Collegiate Jazz Vocalist of the Year in 1999. He has worked with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. His debut recording, Eyes Wide Open, lead to tours and opening for artists such as jazz trumpeter Chris Botti and pop singer Joan Osborne. Vasandani’s second album, 2009′s We Move, was chosen as a New York Times Critic’s Pick.

In a September 20, 2009, review in The New York Times, Nate Chinen called Vasandani “a jazz singer with good ideas, including some about what a jazz singer can be.”

In a review of Eyes Wide Open, The Boston Globe suggested that Vasandani is “mature in sound and rich in texture but also possesses enough youthful angst in its lyrical themes to ward off the fogeyism that male vocalists so easily slip into before their time. Sachal Vasandani will be appearing this week at Jazz Standard…romantique!

NOAH PREMINGER’S latest CD, “Before the Rain” (Palmetto Records, 2011) has received rave reviews in the New York Times, DownBeat, Jazz Times and many other influential publications, and has been getting radio airplay all across the United States. Based in New York City, Noah is a constant presence in the city’s jazz clubs as both a leader and an in-demand sideman, and his international tours have brought his music to audiences in Europe and Australia.

Noah’s arrival in New York City was preceded by enthusiastic buzz emanating from Boston, where his status as a standout student at the New England Conservatory of Music and numerous public performances eventually led to concerts by the Noah Preminger Quartet at Boston’s famous Scullers Jazz Club. In an article about Noah in the Boston Phoenix, music critic Jon Garelick wrote, “His sound is informed by everybody but beholden to no one, which makes him continually unpredictable and continually satisfying.”

Noah and friends will be appearing this week at the Jazz Bar at Hotel Kitano. It’s time we took note of this fresh new talent!

Louis Jordan was an immensely talented singer with great comedic flair, and he fronted his own band for more than twenty years. He duetted with some of the biggest solo singing stars of his day, including Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Jordan was also an actor and a major black film personality—he appeared in dozens of “soundies” (promotional film clips), made numerous cameos in mainstream features and short films, and starred in two musical feature films made especially for him. He was an instrumentalist who specialized in the alto saxophone but played all forms of the instrument, as well as piano and clarinet. A productive songwriter, many of the songs he wrote or co-wrote became influential classics of 20th-century popular music.

Although Jordan began his career in big band swing jazz in the 1930s, he became famous as one of the leading practitioners, innovators and popularizers of “jump blues”, a swinging, up-tempo, dance-oriented hybrid of jazz, blues and boogie-woogie. Typically performed by smaller bands consisting of five or six players, jump music featured shouted, highly syncopated vocals and earthy, comedic lyrics on contemporary urban themes. It strongly emphasized the rhythm section of piano, bass and drums; after the mid-1940s, this mix was often augmented by electric guitar. Jordan’s band also pioneered the use of electric organ.
