Trio of Oz-Tonight at Jazz Standard

February 17, 2011

“It is no longer shocking when a jazz piano trio covers rock songs,” wrote Steve Greenlee at Boston¬Globe.com. “Still, it’s not the norm, and when a trio does it with as much gusto as Trio Of Oz, it qualifies as an event.” This freewheeling and forward–thinking group teams master drummer Omar Hakim (Miles Davis, Sting, Weather Report) with the always–inventive pianist Rachel Z (Wayne Shorter, Steps Ahead, Peter Gabriel) and fleet–fingered acoustic bassist Maeve Royce. Together they put their unique stamp on songs by Stone Temple Pilots, Coldplay, and New Order as well as compositions by Duke Ellington and Wayne Shorter. Greenlee: “The trio uses the Smiths’ ‘There Is a Light That Never Goes Out’ as a vehicle for speedy post–bop and Depeche Mode’s ‘In Your Room’ as a framework for brainy ruminations. Familiar songs heard in fascinating new contexts — that’s what jazz does best.” So there you have it! Once again, here is the line-up Rachel Z – piano, Omar Hakim – drums, percussion, Maeve Royce – bass
