What a treat! Vondie Curtis-Hall at Cleopatra’s Needle…

September 3, 2011

…So we strolled in on a Friday night to catch the usual suspects around 8. The Will Terrill Quartet was on deck with Antoine Drye on Trumpet, they were doing great on their own and suddenly, without warning….they decide to invite a guest.

Vondie Curtis-Hall is best known for his acting work. He has appeared in numerous films including One Good Cop, Sugar Hill, Crooklyn, Drop Squad, Eve’s Bayou, and William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet. His credits as a director include the films Gridlock’d, Glitter, Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story, Waist Deep, as well as episodes of television shows The Shield, Firefly, Chicago Hope, MDs, and The Sopranos. In 2000, Vondie Curtis-Hall and Danny Glover (who portrayed Marty in the film adaptation of Dreamgirls) both appeared in the TNT made-for-television movie Freedom Song.

Vondie Curtis-Hall strolls up to the mic and proceeds to blow us all away with his original and poignant song stylings. His rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Golden Lady” was the icing on the cake. His voice has an ethereal quality and quite a mellow tone. He poured so much emotion into his phrasing that we felt he was painting a picture, taking us on a journey as we sat and listened. We will look for him again as he has clearly carved out a second career, or is it a third…

Thanks to Cleopatra’s Needle for always bringing us consistent and compelling entertainment.
