Steve Turre TONIGHT at Smoke!

April 28, 2012

Steve Turre was raised in San Francisco, California by Mexican American parents, and at first studied violin. However he switched to trombone at age ten and later studied at University of North Texas. In 1968 he played with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, in 1970 he recorded with Carlos Santana, and in 1972 he toured with Ray Charles. He has been the trombonist for the Saturday Night Live band since 1984 and has taught jazz trombone at the Manhattan School of Music since 1988. Tonight the trombonist and conch shell player, brings casual virtuosity to the conventions of small-group hard bop. His new album — “Woody’s Delight” (HighNote), dedicated to a former employer, the trumpeter Woody Shaw — features some of the same musicians found here, including the trumpeter Freddie Hendrix and the bassist Buster Williams. At 8, 10 and 11:30 p.m., Smoke Jazz & Supper Club.

Here is a small sampling of the magic you will experience this evening…
