Alicia Hall Moran & Jason Moran at the Whitney thru May 13!

May 8, 2012

Alicia Hall Moran will soon be a household name. Currently she is the understudy for Audra McDonald in The Gershwins’ Porgy & Bess on Broadway. Prior to the January 12 Broadway opening she performed as Bess in three performances at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts under the direction of Diane Paulus. Mrs. Moran, a mezzo-soprano, composer, and musical theatre actress is an artist. She uses her classical training in opera to explore and exude her mastery as a woman and performer.

Since his formidable emergence on the music scene in the late 90s, jazz pianist Jason Moran has proven more than his brilliance as a performer. The Blue Note Records recording artist has established himself as a risk-taker and innovator of new directions for jazz as a whole.

In almost every category that matters – improvisation, composition, group concept, repertoire, technique and experimentation – Moran, and his group The Bandwagon – with bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits – have challenged the status quo, and earned the reputation as “the future of jazz.”

This week they put it all together for the Whitney Biennial where they perform an interdisciplinary piece. You want to catch this. Trust me!
