The Ralph Alessi Quartet at Jazz Gallery TONIGHT!

June 30, 2012

Ralph Alessi is a jazz trumpeter and composer originally from San Rafael, California, probably better known for being a member of bands led by saxophonist Steve Coleman. He has also performed with a host of others musicians, including Uri Caine, Ravi Coltrane, Fred Hersch and Don Byron, and most recently, avant-jazz drummer Devin Gray. Alessi is also the founder and director of the School for Improvisational Music and is on faculty at New York University.

As on his fine recent album, “Cognitive Dissonance” (Cam Jazz), Mr. Alessi leads an exacting, pugnacious postbop group featuring several excellent rhythm partners, each a bandleader in his own right: the pianist Jason Moran, the bassist Drew Gress and the drummer Nasheet Waits. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Jazz Gallery, 290 Hudson Street, at Spring Street. This should be good.

For future shows, you may want to take advantage of the Summer ‘Fun’ Pass at Jazz Gallery. It’s a great deal!
