Spotlight on Theatre: Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth

August 11, 2012

We decided to check out the Spike Lee directed, Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth live on stage last night. There isn’t anything here you haven’t heard before but the guy is truly fascinating to watch.

The show starts off with a full DJ set by Clark Kent featuring every old school hip hop jam you could ever think of and a few “Brooklyn Anthems” thrown in. Then the lights dim on stage and the curtain opens to Mike Tyson sitting alone, seemingly in deep thought under an interrogation light, dressed impeccably in a sportcoat, shirt and trouser combo perched on a stool.

He stands up and the highjinks begin! For the next two hours he spills it all, no matter how raw, no matter how graphic. And it gets GRAPHIC. Mitch “Blood” Green and Robin Givens don’t stand a chance against this guy’s verbal jabs.

He bobs, he weaves, he pays homage to his hometown of Brownsville: “Never Ran, Never Will”. He speaks of his tragic beginning, his life of crime, becoming the youngest heavy-weight champion of the world and his wives & children. You will laugh, you will cry and you will relive it right along with him. He is a natural onstage while telling HIS story. You can’t make this stuff up folks, and it’s one of the best pieces of theatre I’ve seen all year.
Keep swinging Mike. I think you’ve still got some good years left.
