Celebrating Dizzy Gillespie Friday and Saturday at Lincoln Center…

March 8, 2013

dizzygThe centerpiece of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy and Bird Festival is this repertory concert, a Dizzy Gillespie tribute featuring that trumpeter’s handpicked heir, Jon Faddis, leading his own orchestra. And along with new transcriptions of pieces from the Gillespie big band canon, Mr. Faddis will lead a brightly boppish quintet. He’ll have help from a smattering of guests, notably the tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, the trombonist Steve Turre (Friday only) and the Cuban drummers Ignacio Berroa and Pedrito Martinez. At 8 p.m., Rose Theater, Frederick P. Rose Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, 60th Street and Broadway, (212) 721-6500, jalc.org
