Review of Swinging with the Big Bands 6.13.2013;
We attended the show on Thursday night and it really was like stepping back in time to the golden age of the big band era. The evening started off strong with Vince Giordano leading the way, and in walks Michael Feinstein to rousing applause, belting out a wonderful rendition of SING SING SING!
The evening continued with the great Wynton Marsalis handling most of the trumpet solos and slaying the crowd with a re-creation of some of the best trumpet work the world of jazz has ever heard. Sachal Vasandani gave us his take on Frank Sinatra’s Marie and the band sang the backing vocal much to the delight of the audience. Nellie McKay added her version of Doris Day’s Sentimental Journey and it was enough to keep us clamoring for more! Then in walks Minneapolis jazz club staple Connie Evingson with the original and updated versions of “Do Right” that were both understated and gorgeous. The rest of the evening went off without a hitch and the entire show came together at the end with a jive/gospel number that brought the crowd to its feet! This was an amazing evening of swinging sounds, and we will be back again next season.

Cheers!
