Jazz in July 2013 at the 92nd Street Y

July 16, 2013

charlapThis venerable summer concert series, programmed by Bill Charlap, typically takes a fondly nostalgic view of jazz and American songbook traditions. Its opening concert, on Tuesday, is “Fats Waller: A Handful of Keys,” featuring Mr. Charlap and his fellow pianist Rossano Sportiello alongside the clarinetist Anat Cohen, the trumpeter Randy Sandke and the singer Carol Woods. On Wednesday, the focus turns to the songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen, with vocals by Freddy Cole and Dena DeRose; on Thursday, Mr. Charlap and others, including the pianist Ted Rosenthal and the trumpeter Michael Philip Mossman, revisit the midcentury heyday of West Coast jazz.
