The Mary Halvorsen Septet LIVE at The Stone!

halvorsonGuitarist/composer Mary Halvorson has been active in New York since 2002, following jazz studies at Wesleyan University and the New School. Critics have called Ms. Halvorson “NYC’s least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel, City Arts), “the most forward-thinking guitarist working right now” (Lars Gotrich, and “one of today’s most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis, Village Voice).
Lately, this smart young guitarist of prickly calm, has been in residence at the Stone this week, and she concludes with the midsize ensemble featured on “Illusionary Sea,” due out next month on the Firehouse 12 label. In addition to the bassist John Hébert and the drummer Ches Smith, her changeable longtime rhythm team, the lineup will feature Jonathan Finlayson on trumpet, Tim Berne (filling in for Jon Irabagon) on alto saxophone, Ingrid Laubrock on tenor saxophone and Jacob Garchik on trombone. At 8 and 10 p.m., the Stone, Avenue C and Second Street, East Village,; $15 for each set, $10 for students.
