jordan Sheila Jordan is an American jazz singer and songwriter. Ms. Jordan has recorded as a session musician with an array of critically acclaimed artists in addition to enjoying a robust solo career. Jordan pioneered a bebop and scat jazz singing style with an upright bass as the only accompaniment. Ms. Jordan’s music has earned praise from many critics, particularly for her ability to improvise entire lyrics; Scott Yanow describes her as “one of the most consistently creative of all jazz singers.” Charlie “Bird” Parker would regularly introduce Jordan as “the singer with the million dollar ears.”

Ms. Jordan, 85, is a highly accomplished and exploratory singer — she was recently anointed a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts — whose approach to jazz skews nearly kaleidoscopic. She appears this Tuesday May 6 at 8:30 and 11 p.m., Birdland, 315 West 44th Street, Clinton, 212-581-3080; $40 cover, with a $10 minimum.
